WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology: early

Weather conditions:

According to reports of local people much snow accumulated in the winter. Spring started early, but was prolonged and relatively dry. Snow Buntings arrived around 25 April, while snow-free patches appeared on level areas around 5 May, after warming and first rain. Break-up on channels of small rivers started on 20 May, and Arctic Foxes in summer fur appeared about the same time. Ice started to break in the middle reaches of the Gyda River on 15 June and in lower reaches on 18 June. The last snowfall on 10 June was followed by rapid warming on 13-15 June and hot weather. Geese appeared on 20 May and mass arrival occurred on 25 May. Red-breasted Geese arrived on 10 June, divers on 12-13 June and swans on 19-20 June. Generally, weather in 2003 was more close to average compared with cold and rainy 2002.

low

Breeding conditions:

Numbers of Willow Grouse increased compared with 2002.

According to reports of local reindeer herders lemmings were numerous in spring, but then disappeared.

Rodent species recorded:

LatinAbundance
Lemmus sibiricusrare
Dicrostonyx torquatusrare

Summary of fauna studies:
