Weather conditions: |
By the data of arrival on 26.05 plain tundra adjacent to Anadyr Bay coast was snow-free except for the valleys of already running springs. Mountains in vicinities had winter appearance, but snow-cover reduced to 30% by departure date on 12.06. Ice melted on small lakes and was covered by melt-water on the bay in the beginning of June. Spring was early, judging by terminating of cotton-grass flowering, mass flowering of willows, appearance of bumble-bees, butterfly imagos and Arctic Ground Squirrels in early June. Warm and dry summer resulted in tundra fires, both on plain and in mountains. Total affected area exceeded 350000 hectares according to official reports, and smoke considerably reduced visibility on some days.

Breeding conditions:
|
Arctic and Red foxes were not seen. Rough-legged Buzzards nested at average density, and 2 found nests contained 4 and 5 eggs. Snowy Owls were not seen, but Short-eared Owls were common, and their clutches found in early June contained 5-7 eggs. Long-tailed Skuas had complete fresh clutches on 8-10.06 and according to general impression nested at average density for the species, while Pomarine and Arctic skuas were seen on migration. Hundreds of Herring Gulls nested in colonies on islands and on lake shores, and most nests contained complete clutches by 10.06. Glaucous Gulls nested on rocks in several places along the bay coast. Displaying Pectoral Sandpipers, numerous Long-toed Stints, Ringed Plovers, Whimbrels, Skylarks, Red-throated Pipits, Lapland Buntings and Sandhill Cranes were seen on 27.05 near airport. Geese migration was terminating, except for Brant Geese which were still on active passage. Active migration of seaducks, Red-necked Phalaropes, Wood Sandpipers, Red-necked Stints and Grey-rumped Tattlers occurred in the end of May. Most of Pacific Golden Plovers, Dunlins, Ruffs, Long-toed and Temminck's stints, Common Snipes, Long-billed Dowitchers and Whimbrels occupied territories and displayed at this time. Complete clutches of Ruff, Long-toed Stint, Common Snipe, Pectoral Sandpiper, Red-necked Phalarope, Ringed Plover and Whimbrel were found from 1-5.06, while Long-billed Dowitchers started egg-laying and Pacific Golden Plovers apparently have laid eggs as well. No direct data on breeding success of waders are available, but observed conditions imply average or better success in these birds.

Rodent dynamics:
|
| Lemmings and voles were not seen in June, but vole winter nests were seen on marshes and near springs, and a pair of Arctic Skuas was observed eating vole. Voles were seen in the city vicinity in August, and presumably their numbers were average in summer. Arctic Ground Squirrels were rather common.
