WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology: average

Weather conditions:

Snow cover reduced to 50% on 13 June and completely melted on 23 June. The timing of spring snow melt was average, but the local weather was cool and foggy throughout June. We have few breeding ecology data from 2003, but the cool wet weather in the early season may have resulted in fewer or delayed nesting attempts.

Season temperature: cold
Season humidity:
Date of 50% snow-cover: 13.06
Date of ice-break on rivers:
Date of final loss of snow: 23.06

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

low

Breeding conditions:

We have too few nest success data from 2003 to comment on the effects of predation pressure or weather. Similarly, our regular plot surveys were not carried out in this year, so we cannot comment on inter-annual changes in density of breeding birds. Mayfield estimate of hatch success in shorebirds was 0.33.

Rodent dynamics:

Lemmings were at a low in this year.

Rodent species recorded:

LatinAbundance

Summary of fauna studies:

In 2003, the research at East Bay was focussed primarily on Ruddy Turnstones. Many of the usual plot surveys, and studies of other birds were not carried out in this year.
